Performance
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler’s base engine is a 3.6L V6, paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine is rated for 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, with smooth, consistent acceleration that’s improved with the eight-speed.
It also has a 270-horsepower, 2.4L turbo-four option, which brings its 295 lb-ft of torque to a much lower RPM. This engine is a mild-hybrid system, paired with a 48-volt battery that can efficiently run accessories with the engine off, and improves fuel economy with an engine stop-start system.
In either configuration, a well-equipped, standard wheelbase Wrangler can tow up to 2,000 pounds, or 3,500 pounds with the four-door Unlimited model.
Driving Experience
On the road, the Wrangler experienced some redesigns to enhance its ability to absorb pavement imperfections and stay on-center at highway speeds, as well as body insulation and sound deadening that improve the interior noise penetration and cabin temperature.
Off road, the Jeep Wrangler excels as always, though there are some new additions for off-road capability. A two-speed, part-time four-wheel drive transfer case, skid plates, tow hooks, and a limited-slip differential are available for some trim levels, and the tight turning radius and higher ground clearance allow the Wrangler to handle any obstacle in the off-road environment.
For those in search of extreme adventure capability, the Rubicon model is equipped with 33-inch tires, stronger axles with selectable-locking differentials, disconnecting sway bars, and an off-road-specialized, part-time transfer case that offers a crawl ratio for rock crawling.
