The 2018 Ram 5500 can be equipped with several different engines.

The commercial-grade 6.4L HEMI® V8 gasoline-powered engine produces the Ram 5500’s best-in-class 370-horsepower and best-in-class 429 lb-ft of torque. This engine is equipped with fuel-saver technology as well, which reduces the power to four cylinders in low-load situations.

Next up is the class-exclusive 6.7L Cummins® turbo-diesel inline-six engine that is capable of towing up to 30,600 pounds and has a gross combined weight rating of 38,500 pounds. This engine can also run on B20 biodiesel fuel.

Both engines can be paired with the AISIN six-speed automatic transmission to enhance its right- or left-side power-take-off capabilities. For trucks that drive equipment like vacuum pumps, compressors, or generators via driveshaft, left-side is the only option, but with equipment like a tandem pump, right-side is the only option. This feature allows the vehicle to be optimized for the maximum efficiency, cost, and durability.

Configurations

The 2018 Ram 5500 is available in regular cab and crew cab configurations. The regular cab configuration is available for the Tradesmen and SLT models and has the maximum available cab-to-axle length for hauling the heaviest loads, and can accommodate 15- or 16-foot upfits. The gross vehicle weight rating options span from 15,000 to 19,500 pounds.

The crew cab configuration is available for the Tradesmen, SLT, or Laramie models and offers enough cab-to-axle length to accommodate 9- to 11-foot upfits, as well as enough space for a work crew. The gross vehicle weight rating options span from 15,000 pounds to 19,500 pounds.

The Ram 5500 is available in single- or dual-wheel, with five power-take-off options, an upfitter-ready electrical module with an excess of 50 inputs and outputs, and front and rear park assist technology.
