How To Change a Tire
You’re driving down the road and hit a pothole. The next thing you know, you hear a pop, and then one of your wheels feels unstable against the road. This is the classic scenario of getting a flat tire, and it’s a more common occurrence than you think. Whether you’re driving over a rough patch of road or you encounter a nail in your path, knowing how to change a tire is key.
To help you learn the steps to changing a tire, our team at New Holland Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (CDJR) has brought you this guide. Keep on reading, and you’ll be back to driving around New Holland, Lancaster, and Reading, PA, in no time.
The Steps To Changing a Flat Tire
Changing a tire is simple and can be done on the side of the road if you’re in the right environment and have a spare tire aboard your vehicle.
The first thing you’ll want to do is bring your car to a flat surface—never change your tire on an incline—and then secure your tire with a wedge beneath the wheel.
Afterward, the steps you’ll take are:
- Pry off the wheel cover.
- Partially loosen the lug nuts.
- Raise the car off the ground using a jack.
- Fully remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the flat tire.
- Place the spare tire onto the lug bolts.
- Partially tighten the lug nuts onto the spare tire.
- Lower the car back to the ground and finish tightening the lug nuts.
- Put the wheel cover back onto the tire.
After you’ve replaced your tire with a spare, it’s important to have your spare replaced with a full-size tire as soon as possible. While the spare will provide good traction for a short time, it’s not a long-term solution.
Can I Repair My Tire?
In some situations, you can have your tire repaired using a tire repair kit. In this case, you’ll be filling the hole in your tire with a solution to keep the air from escaping. This is also a temporary solution, but it can save you from getting a new full-size tire for longer. However, tire repairs can only be performed under specific conditions.
In general, you can repair your tire if it has experienced a direct puncture to the tread, such as a nail going directly into the tire. If the tire has a large slash across it or damage to the sidewall, you’ll need to replace it. If you’re not sure if you can repair the tire, you may want to consult a service technician.
